Circular Australia welcomes the Federal Budget’s allocation of $23 million to advance Australia’s circular economy. This funding underscores the government’s alignment with industry and advisory groups to embed circularity across national policy, strategy and programs. Under Minister Tanya Plibersek’s leadership, Australia is positioning itself to capture the estimated $1.9 trillion global value of the circular economy by designing out waste, keeping materials in use, and building resilient markets.
The Budget builds on recent momentum by embedding circular principles into key national initiatives—such as the Net Zero sectoral plans, the National Reconstruction Fund, and the Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group. The newly introduced Environmentally Sustainable Procurement Policy will mandate waste reduction and recycled materials usage in major government construction tenders from mid-2024, with an expanded scope including textiles, ICT goods, furniture and fittings by mid-2025.
These measures underscore circular economy’s role in delivering jobs, stimulating industries, and protecting ecosystems. By decoupling growth from finite resource consumption and regenerating natural systems, the policy framework charts a pragmatic path toward sustainable development and resilient economic transformation.
