This report identifies significant and urgent opportunities to reduce plastic use, and to give disposed plastics new life as high-quality recyclates where they are procured, sorted, and collected through new circular supply chains.
As part of its Circular Supply Chain Alliance program, NSW Circular led a project that recycled single-use uncontaminated plastic products from hospital wards. This provided valuable insights into the economic potential of further scaling up these efforts.
The project, supported by evidence from other parts of the healthcare system, indicates significant potential savings from reducing, reusing, and recycling hospital waste plastics that are currently incinerated or landfilled. These savings can be reinvested into patient care, staffing, resources, and other essential services.
